Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Wednesday met with residents and stakeholders in Orhionmwon and Uhunmwode Local Government Areas (LGAs) to discuss the state’s Regional Development Masterplan and Benin City Masterplan.
These comprehensive plans are designed to serve as a 30-year blueprint for Edo State’s sustainable development. Governor Obaseki emphasized the importance of planning, highlighting the lack of such a strategy as a key factor hindering past development efforts. The plans aim to guide future administrations and ensure Edo State’s continued progress.

The Governor highlighted several key initiatives aligned with the master plans. He pointed to attracting seven new investors focused on large-scale mechanized agriculture in Uhunmwode and Orhionmwon LGAs. This strategic move positions Edo State as a major agricultural producer for the South-South region.
Governor Obaseki also addressed plans to establish at least one technical school in each local government area. These schools will be tailored to specific trades, ensuring graduates have a clear path to employment. The Edo State College of Education, Abudu, was cited as a key institution for training future educators.
Commissioner for Food Security and Agriculture, Hon. Stephen Idehenre, elaborated on plans to integrate technology into the agricultural sector. This initiative aims to attract young people to the field and revitalize Edo’s agricultural potential.

Additionally, the master plan outlines investments in the oil palm industry, creating significant employment opportunities for Edo youths.
Mrs. Edugie Agbonlahor, MD of the Edo State Transport Agency, detailed the state’s transportation development goals. These plans encompass all modes of transportation, including:
* Utilizing the existing Benin City Airport and exploring the development of a new airport in Auchi.
* Launching a pilot water transportation program using water buses on Edo’s waterways.
* Expanding the Edo City Transport Service (ECTS) bus network to other regions of the state.
* Implementing rail connections in Benin City, Abudu, and other key areas.
* Upgrading road junctions to alleviate traffic congestion.
HRH Edobor Uwaifo, Enogie of Omolua-Igbanke, commended Governor Obaseki’s vision in developing a master plan. He urged further investment in the Igbanke General Hospital to maximize the benefits of the state’s healthcare initiatives.
By fostering collaboration and transparency, Edo State is charting a course for a prosperous and sustainable future. The Regional Development and Benin City Masterplan serve as a framework for achieving this ambitious vision.
