In honor of the sacrifices made by the nation’s fallen heroes, Edo State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki has asked Nigerians to actively commit to the promotion of peace and unity in the nation.
The governor made this announcement at a celebration in Benin City honoring Armed Forces Day in 2023.
He declared, “Today we honor those who gave their lives so that this nation would remain unified and there would be peace. Given that today is about sacrifice, it is crucial that we use it for introspection. It is crucial that we give ourselves up for sacrifice in order to reflect on what others have done.
“The country’s economic condition is extremely challenging, placing pressure on people and causing some of them to turn to horrific crimes. That is a fact that we must face. It cannot just be about what we gain from Nigeria and its advantages. We need to start thinking more about what we have to offer the nation because until our way of thinking changes, the conflict, crises, and insecurity we currently experience will continue.
Obaseki continued, “Everyone wants to take from Nigeria, but very few want to contribute back to Nigeria.”
He praised the level of security enjoyed by citizens and security organizations, stressing that his administration would continue to devote more resources to the protection of lives and property.
He said, “We are grateful to our citizens. People are now concerned and take part in the state’s current security system. The security system is dependent on the populace because without the farmers in the fields, who inform us of movements and what is happening, and the people on the streets, who trust us and provide information, we would not be aware of what is happening and unable to fight crime.
The recent release of the Igueben abduction victims is a prime example of teamwork among the security services, who are all contributing what they have to the collective effort to secure Edo State.
“For us in Edo, we are spreading that message. The focus should be on us, not just on you. What should our society, state, and nation do to promote harmony and peace? We in Edo will keep investmenting in our security.
