
Four new cases of Lassa fever have been recorded in Edo State, bringing the state’s total number of confirmed cases to 28.
Prof. Obehi Akoria, the Edo State Commissioner for Health, while briefing journalists in Benin City said that the four new cases were confirmed in three local councils in the state, Esan West, Etsako West, and Esan North East.
She added, “We have continued to notice a steady increase in the number of confirmed cases of Lassa fever with four new cases recently confirmed in three local councils in the state,”
Esan West has two new cases, Etsako West has one, and Esan North East has one.
With the addition of the four new cases, there are now a total of 28 confirmed cases in the state, with 25 people actively being treated. Fortunately, we have not identified any fatalities caused by the illness.
The 25 patients, 20 of whom are adults and five of whom are children, are being treated at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital and are responding to it.
Prof. Akoria identified the LGAs in the state that have been affected by Lassa virus thus far, including Etsako West (12), Esan North East (7), Esan West (5), Esan South East (2), Etsako East (1), and Owan East (1).
The health commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting citizens’ health and safety and asked people to abide by all health regulations to stop the disease’s spread in order to safeguard themselves and their loved ones.
Prof. Akoria stated, “While the government is putting various steps in place to stop the disease from spreading throughout the state, We ask everyone to support the government’s efforts in stopping the spread of Lassa fever by adhering to guidelines to keep healthy and safe.
If you experience any Lassa fever symptoms, such as fever, headache, muscle discomfort, or weakness, call your doctor right away. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Avoid coming into touch with rat urine or feces.
