The Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on all residents of Edo State and Nigerians at large to reflect deeply on the enduring significance of June 12 and recommit themselves to the ideals of democracy, justice, and national unity.
Governor Okpebholo described June 12 as a profound symbol of the sacrifices made by courageous Nigerians in pursuit of genuine democratic governance. He urged citizens to guard the freedoms and democratic milestones that have been hard-earned over the years.
“June 12, our Democracy Day, stands as a testament to the collective resolve of Nigerians who, in 1993, voted overwhelmingly in favor of true democratic choice,” Governor Okpebholo said. “It is a time to remember the legacy of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and honor all those who fought valiantly for the democracy we now enjoy.”
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to people-focused leadership, Governor Okpebholo highlighted the goals of the ‘SHINE’ agenda, which aims to deliver real progress across critical sectors such as security, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, and education.
“Our government is firmly rooted in democratic values and the conviction that leadership must be attuned to the needs and hopes of the people,” the Governor emphasized. “We are committed to ensuring that democratic dividends are extended to every corner of Edo State, creating lasting peace, growth, and shared prosperity.”
He also encouraged citizens to remain actively engaged in the democratic process by holding leaders accountable and contributing positively to the development of the state.
“Democracy flourishes when citizens are informed, involved, and proactive,” Governor Okpebholo noted. “I urge everyone to stay engaged, fulfill your civic duties, and work together to strengthen our democratic institutions.”
Governor Okpebholo concluded by wishing all Edo people and Nigerians a peaceful and thoughtful Democracy Day, praying for continued peace, unity, and progress across the state and the country.
