Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has unveiled a groundbreaking telemedicine initiative aimed at revolutionizing healthcare delivery across Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) in the state. The launch, held at Central Clinic, Ukpenu, in Esan West Local Government Area, signals a significant step towards providing accessible and high-quality healthcare services to residents.
Joined by dignitaries including the Edo State First Lady, Dr. Betsy Obaseki, and Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Alli, Governor Obaseki emphasized the transformative potential of telemedicine in addressing the longstanding challenges within the healthcare system. With a vision to mend the deficiencies inherited upon assuming office in 2016, Obaseki outlined his administration’s strategic focus on revitalizing both the education and healthcare sectors.
Highlighting the administration’s achievements in the education sector, Governor Obaseki reiterated his commitment to replicating the same success in healthcare. Central to this effort is the refurbishment and equipping of over 200 PHCs with state-of-the-art facilities, including solar power systems and internet connectivity. Additionally, emphasis has been placed on addressing the shortage of healthcare professionals through the establishment of a premier nursing school in Benin City, with plans to revitalize the Edo State School of Medical Health Technology.
In tandem with efforts to enhance infrastructure and human resources, the governor underscored the importance of affordable healthcare access for all citizens. He championed the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme as a means to mitigate the financial burden associated with healthcare services, emphasizing its affordability and comprehensive coverage.
With the integration of telemedicine, Governor Obaseki envisions bridging the gap between rural and urban healthcare systems, thereby ensuring equitable access to medical expertise and specialized care. This pioneering initiative aims to leverage technology to connect patients in remote areas with skilled healthcare professionals, ultimately improving health outcomes and reducing disparities.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Alli, echoed the governor’s sentiments, emphasizing the role of telemedicine in democratizing healthcare access and empowering communities. He encouraged widespread participation in the Edo Health Insurance Scheme, affirming its role in facilitating seamless access to quality healthcare services.
The launch of the telemedicine program in Ukpenu, Esan West, elicited praise from community leaders, including Dr. Joseph Abhulimen, President of the Esan Peoples Congress in America (EPC), who hailed Governor Obaseki for fulfilling the aspirations of the Esan people.
