In a bid to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has announced the extension of the free bus scheme for an additional three months, now running until July 2024.
Initially introduced in September 2023 for a two-month period, the free transport initiative aimed to cushion the effects of the federal government’s fuel subsidy removal on Edo residents. With its resounding success, benefitting over 1.5 million individuals during the initial phase, Governor Obaseki extended the program twice, first until February 2024 and subsequently until April 2024.
The free bus service encompasses both intra and intercity routes operated by the Edo City Transport Services (ECTS), covering key routes such as Auchi – Igarra – Ibillo–Ososo, Uzebba–Ikhin – Otuo, and Abudu-Ubiaja, among others. Intra-city routes include Ramat–Kingsquare, New Benin–Kingsquare, and Kingsquare–Ekenwan Road, among others.
Managing Director of Edo State Transport Authority (ESTA), Mrs. Edugie Agbonlahor, affirmed the extension as a testament to the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of Edo residents. She emphasized that the decision was made in light of the positive feedback received and the continued economic challenges resulting from the fuel subsidy removal.
Over the past eight months, the free bus scheme has made a significant impact, with nearly five million Edo residents benefiting from the program. This includes over 142,000 intercity passengers and more than 4.6 million intra-city passengers.
With this extension, Governor Obaseki reaffirms his dedication to ensuring accessible transportation for all Edo residents, particularly amidst prevailing economic uncertainties.
