38-year-old Omobayo Marvellous Godwins has assumed office as the new Deputy Governor of Edo State, following his swearing-in ceremony at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City. The oath of office was administered by the Edo State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Daniel Iyobosa Okungbowa.
His appointment came after the impeachment of Philip Shaibu by the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA). The ceremony was attended by various dignitaries, including Governor Godwin Obaseki, Speaker of the EDHA Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, Secretary to the Edo State Government Osarodion Ogie Esq., Chairman Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Anthony Aziegbemi; and other government officials, party leaders, and traditional rulers.
Governor Obaseki expressed confidence in Omobayo’s ability to unite diverse interests within the state and emphasized the importance of youth involvement in governance. He highlighted Omobayo’s youthfulness as a symbol of the state’s commitment to empowering young people.
In his remarks, Governor Obaseki acknowledged the unexpected turn of events leading to the appointment and underscored the necessity of continuity in governance. He praised Omobayo’s professionalism and expressed optimism about their collaboration in achieving the state’s developmental goals.
The choice of Omobayo, a native of Akoko-Edo, as Deputy Governor was hailed as historic by His Royal Highness, the Imah of Somorika, Oba Sule Idaiye, who commended the Governor for his inclusive approach.
In response, Omobayo expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and affirmed his dedication to supporting Governor Obaseki’s agenda. He lauded the Governor’s leadership and pledged to contribute to the state’s progress, drawing inspiration from Obaseki’s vision and administrative style.
