
The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has expressed his sorrow over the loss of Senator Franca Afegbua, who served as Nigeria’s first elected senator and formerly represented the Bendel North Senatorial District of Old Bendel State who passed away at the age of 79.
The governor referred to Senator Afegbua in a statement as a “pace-setter, trail-blazer, and visionary” who continues to serve as an inspiration for women in Nigeria and all of Africa.
He stated, “I am devastated by the news of the loss of Nigeria’s first elected senator, who represented Old Bendel State’s Bendel North Senatorial District.
“She was an entrepreneur who, at a time when it was a mammoth job, championed the cause of female representation in government and gender mainstreaming. She was a trailblazer who deserves to be celebrated for her bravery and exemplary exploits.”
The governor said that Senator Afegbua’s passing was a great loss because she served as an inspiration to girls who are in need of mentors.
