Obaseki approves over N1.5bn to pay back debts owed to 1,559 council pensioners since 1986

In order to pay back debts owed to 1,559 pensioners of local government councils in the state that has accumulated since 1986, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Edo State, has approved over N1.5 billion.

The affected pensioners are asked to bring their documents to the Local Government Pensions Bureau on or before January 27, 2023, according to a statement from Washington Abbe, Permanent Secretary/Chairman of the Local Government Pensions Bureau.

He said: “This is to inform all Edo State Local Government Pensioners that the State Government has kindly approved the immediate release of the sum of N1,509,333,776.26k (One Billion, Five Hundred and Nine Million, Three Hundred and Thirty-Three Thousand, Seven Hundred and Seventy-Six Naira, Twenty Six Kobo only) for the payment of all outstanding pension arrears to the affected 1,559 pensioners for the period of 1986 – 2021.”

According to Abbe, “The following documentation must be provided to the Local Government Pensions Bureau by the affected pensioners no later than January 27, 2023: Pensioners I.D Card; Photocopies of Biometric and Pay Advice, and Bank Statements from Date of Retirement to 31st December, 2022.

 “The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) should take note, please.”
