
The Edo State Government is seeking for the support and cooperation of the residents to curb the spread of Lassa fever as the number of confirmed cases and fatalities from Lassa fever in Edo State has continued to steadily increase.
Prof. Akoria Obehi, the Edo State Commissioner for Health, told journalists in Benin City that eight new cases of Lassa fever had been recorded in the state in the last 24 hours, along with one new death.
She emphasized the necessity for residents in all localities to follow preventive measures against the spread of the disease, saying that the latest cases were reported in Etsako West, Esan North East, Esan West, and Egor Local Government Areas (LGAs).
She stated, “Edo State has recorded eight additional cases of Lassa fever, bringing the total number of patients in the state to 96.” A new death from the illness was also verified, bringing the total number of fatalities to nine with a case fatality rate of nine percent. Two deaths in Esan North East and four in Etsako West have been recorded thus far, while one death has been confirmed in each of the LGAs of Etsako East, Oredo, and Esan West.
Prof. Akoria bemoaned the spread of the disease among communities, noting that Etsako West LGA is the most affected by lassa fever in the state 37 confirmed cases of Lassa fever and 4 deaths, followed by Esan West LGA with 24 cases and Esan North East LGA with 19 confirmed cases.
She continued, “While the government is putting various measures in place to stop the disease from spreading throughout the state, we urge everyone to support the government’s efforts by adhering to guidelines to stay healthy and safe.
“Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, prevent contact with rat urine or faeces, avoid drinking contaminated food or water, and get medical assistance immediately if you have any symptoms of Lassa fever, such as fever, headache, muscle soreness, or weakness.”
